Trey Hair’s two-run homer gave the host Sussex County Miners the lead on their way to a seventh straight win as they downed the New York Boulders 4-3 in a Frontier League game at Skylands Stadium in Augusta, NJ, on Sunday.

The victory completed a sweep of the three-game series for the Miners over the Boulders, who had entered weekend riding a three-game winning streak of their own.

Hair’s homer came in the fifth inning and erased a 3-2 Miners’ deficit. It was the second straight game that Hair homered as he upped his season total to five.

New York had raced out to a 3-0 lead after 2½ innings. Austin Dennis hit a one-out solo home run in the first inning; then, in the top of the third, Tucker Nathans and Kevonte Mitchell lined run-scoring singles.

Sussex County got back into the game with a two-run bottom of the third – one run coming on an RBI double by Nilo Rijo, the other on a two-out throwing error by Boulders’ starting pitcher Dan Wirchansky.

New York threatened to tie the game in the top of the eighth when they loaded the bases with no outs. However, Miners’ reliever Michael Mediavilla got out of the jam unscathed as he induced a pop out and force play at the plate before striking out Jack Sundberg to end the inning.

Wirchansky took the loss for New York, going four innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on four hits. He walked eight and struck out six.

Mike Castellani picked up the win for the Miners with 6 2/3 innings of work. He surrendered six hits, three runs, walked three and struck out one.

Jason Miller pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save for Sussex County.

After a day off on Monday, the Boulders had up to Troy, NY, to begin a three-game set with the Tri-City Valley Cats on Tuesday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium – first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The series will conclude with 6:30 p.m. starts on Wednesday and Thursday.
