The New York Boulders bounced back from a 12-1 beatdown, with an 8-1 win, to split a doubleheader against the New Jersey Jackals on Friday night at Palisades Credit Union Park.

In the first game, the Jackals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Santiago Chirino in the top of the first, and never looked back.

Jared Milch started for the Jackals, allowing just one run over six innings. The lefty had five strikeouts and gave up just four hits, en route to picking up the win, improving to 1-0.

Boulders’ starter Ben Strahm was relieved after allowing six runs, seven hits and three walks after just 2 2/3 innings. The Jackals scored four of those runs in the second inning, the last of which was scored by Chirino, who reached first on an error by Boulders first baseman Ray Hernandez.

New York fell behind 7-0 before finally scoring on a homerun to left field by Zach Penprase in the bottom of the fifth.

The Boulders bullpen could not stop the bleeding, with reliever John Cain allowing a five-run sixth inning, marked by home runs by Alfredo Marte and Jason Agresti.

In the second game, the Jackals again opened the scoring on an RBI single by Marte, but this time the Boulders responded.

Kevonte Mitchell tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI double, and then scored on an error by Jackals third baseman T.J. Ward, who threw it over Dalton Combs’ head on what would’ve been an inning ending out at first. This allowed two more Boulders to score, as they went up 4-1 to finish the first.

Orsen Josephina, who was making his first start of the season, was then able to settle in, allowing no runs over the next three innings. He finished with six hits allowed and just the one earned run over four innings.

Mitchell added on all of the required insurance with a rand Slam in the bottom of the sixth to put the Boulders up 8-1.

Boulders’ reliever Nathan Alexander picked up the win, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings, with two strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

The Boulders return tomorrow to host the Jackals again at 6:30 for game three.
