Boulders Pick up First Win of Series Against Sussex County Miners

The New York Boulders picked up a crucial win in the first of a three home game series against the Sussex County Miners this evening, Tuesday, June 15.

The Miners struck first at the top of a first. Leading off with a walk, Martin Figueria was sent home after an RBI-single from Audy Ciriaco. The Boulders answered back in the top of the second with a solo home-run from Ray Hernandez, making it his third home-run in a two game span.

Chuck Taylor put the Miners ahead, 2-1, during the top of the third with a solo shot to right field sending Nilo Rijo home. Kevonte Mitchell, who was back in the line-up tonight, bombed a double to center field, sending Zach Kirtley home, after doubling one of his own, evening the score at the end of the third at 2-2.

Things got chippy at the top of the fourth, as Miner’s Cito Culver was tossed after showing his disapproval of a third strike call made by the home plate umpire.

Boulder’s starting pitcher Brian Rapp’s night came to an end after pitching five innings in which he allowed six hits, two runs, and totaled eight Ks.

After a scoreless five and a half innings, the game stayed tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom ninth. Tucker Nathans started things off for the Boulders, singling a shot to center field. Zach Penprase followed with a walk, followed by Brandon Bingel being hit by a pitch which left the bases loaded. Phil Capra was walked, sending Nathans home, sealing a 3-2 win for the Boulders. The loss for the Sussex County Miners ended their six game winning streak.

Mitchell led the way for the Boulders totaling two hits and one RBI followed by Nathans tallying two hits of his own and Hernandez following behind with one hit and one run.

Tanner Kiest picked up the win for the Boulders pitching a perfect ninth inning with three straight strikeouts. Jalen Miller Sr. flagged the loss for the Miners.

The Boulders will look to make it two straight as former New York Met, Todd Fraizer is set to return for the Miners for the second game of the series which is slated for tomorrow night, June 16 at 7 p.m at Palisades Credit Union Park
