New York’s fourth-inning rally proved to be enough, allowing them to take game one of a three-game series against the Sussex County Miners. The Boulder's six-run inning sealed an 8-3 victory tonight, July 16th, at Palisades Credit Union Park.

Kevonte Mitchell started things off in the fourth blasting his sixth home run of the season. Phil Caufield then knocked a two-run RBI double sending home Tucker Nathans and Ryan Ramiz, who both singled early in the inning to get on base. Right after, Jack Sundberg tallied his first home run of the season, sending home Phil Capra and Caufield. Sundberg was three for five on the night adding a double and a single to his line. Ramiz was three for four, notching three singles.

The Boulder’s defense found ways to escape an early jump by the Miners in the first two innings. Milton Smith Jr. hit Caufield at the cutoff who saved a run from scoring at the top of the first. At the top of the second, after walking two straight batters, the Boulders pulled through to avoid advancing any Miners home, keeping the game scoreless at the end of two.

Sussex County found a way to capitalize first off of Orsen Josephina’s shaky start for New York at the top of the third. Juan Kelly blasted a two-run home run sending home Martin Figueroa to put the Miners up 2-0 on the Boulders.

The Miner’s third inning stance was not enough to halt the Boulders, who came out firing at the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom of the sixth, New York added to their lead with a two-run home run from Phil Capra. Sussex County tacked on one final run at the top of the ninth after a sacrifice fly from Aaron Knapp which sent home Cito Culver, sealing an 8-3 Boulder victory.

Josephina’s night came to an end after pitching six innings in which he walked four, struck out two, and allowed two earned runs on six hits, picking up the win for New York.

Max Herrmann tagged the loss for Sussex County, pitching six innings in which he allowed eight earned runs on ten hits, striking out two and walking one.

The Boulders and Miners are set to play game two of the series tomorrow night, July 17, at 6:30 pm at PCU Park.
