A shutout performance by the Boulder’s bullpen allowed New York to start their lengthy home stance with a 1-0 victory against the New Jersey Jackals, tonight August 3 at Palisades Credit Union Park.

Boulder’s starting pitcher Orsen Josephina led the charge, picking up the win for New York in which he pitched six innings, allowing just four hits and no runs. He walked two batters and struck out five resulting in one of his strongest starts this season.

It was a defensive battle between the cross-state rivals from the start. The Boulders found ways to escape some critical situations early in the game to keep New Jersey scoreless.

At the top of the first, after a walk and a single from Jason Agresti, Josephina ended the inning with a crucial strikeout to keep the game even at 0-0.

Later in the fourth inning, the Jackals led off with two singles from Agresti and Justin Wylie. Josephina walked Alex Kachler shortly after, leading to a bases-loaded scenario in which the Boulders escaped after a flyout by Ryan Ramiz in right field, which kept the game scoreless through four innings.

New York capitalized off this defensive stance at the bottom of the fifth as Marcus Mastrobuoni blasted his second home run of the season to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Boulders. This would be the only run scored by both teams.

Jackals starting pitcher Chris Tessitore pitched four innings allowing four hits and one earned run. He struck out three batters and walked none, picking up the loss for New Jersey.

Nathan Alexander came in to relieve Josephina at the top of the seventh, picking up right where he left off. Alexander picked up the save for the Boulders in which he pitched three innings, striking out three batters, allowing no hits and no runs.

This was the second combined shutout for the Boulders this season. They will look to continue their winning streak tomorrow against the New Jersey Jackals at 11 am at Palisades Credit Union Park for game two of the series
