The New York Boulders won both games of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Sussex County Miners to complete the sweep of their midweek series. The Boulders won 5-1 and 2-1 respectively, behind solid pitching and some walk-off magic.

The early game resumed at the bottom of the second after being suspended last night due to rain. Last night Boulders’ starter Danny Wirchansky worked himself out of a jam with runners on second and third with no outs, just as the umpires called for a stoppage, leaving the game scoreless.

The Boulders’ offense came out hot to start the day, with four straight hits in the bottom of the second. Phil Caulfield brought in the first of two runs in the inning with an RBI-single to center field, followed by a sacrifice fly by Zach Kirtley to double the Boulder’s lead at 2-0.

After a 1-2-3 top of the third, New York’s offense again got after Tyler Luneke. Ray Hernandez ledoff the inning with his 20th homer, becoming the first player in the Frontier League to hit that mark this season. He was followed by another Caulfield RBI, this time a double, and a Milton Smith Jr.’s sacrifice fly to put New York ahead 5-0.

Luneke picked up the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits through just 1 1/3 innings, in relief of Max Hermann who pitched a scoreless first inning last night.

For New York, Ryan Munoz was outstanding en route to picking up his third win of the year. He allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out four Miners. The lone run he gave up came on a leadoff homer in the top of the ninth by Kaleo Johnson.

The Miners wasted little time scoring in game two however, taking their first lead on a wild pitch by James Mulry. The lefty threw a breaking ball that bounced past catcher Phil Capra which allowed Chuck Taylor to cross home in the top of the second. Mulry started shaky in his first career professional start, but regained his command to finish with just one earned run on three hits and two walks.

New York answered quickly, evening the score on a leadoff home run by Mastrobuoni in the bottom of the third. It was Mastrobuoni’s fourth blast of the year in just 58 at bats.

Sussex rode the back of Jalen Miller Sr. who pitched five innings and surrendered two hits and one walk, but could not find any offense to get him the win.

Instead it was New York’s offense who found a way to come through. After a leadoff walk by Tucker Nathans, and a single by Ray Hernandez, Mastrobuoni ended the game with a walk-off single to right field, collecting the game's only RBIs for New York.

Zach Schneider picked up the win after retiring the last two batters of the seventh, his second of the year, while Michael Mediavilla earned the loss.

The Boulders will try to continue their roll with another doubleheader tomorrow against the New Jersey Jackals.
