POMONA, NY — In a windy Sunday showdown, the Sussex County Miners showed off their bats in a 14-0 victory over the New York Boulders at Clover Stadium.

The chilly atmosphere did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the 2,270 spectators who stuck around to the end to witness the Boulders' only hit on the day by North Rockland and Rockland Community College alum Jimmy Costin.

Sussex starting pitcher Griffin Baker showcased his talents on the mound, delivering an outstanding performance in the form of a nine-strikeout one-hitter. Baker's commanding presence left the Boulders offense struggling to find any traction.

The Miners (13-6) also wasted no time making their presence felt at the plate, tallying 12 hits in the win. Jawuan Harris and Abraham Mow each drove in three runs for Sussex. Juan Santana and Willie Escala each added two RBI.

Boulders pitchers had a rough day on the mound. July Sosa, who had been exceptional in his last three starts, struggled early on before leaving with an injury in the fifth inning. Sosa hit three batters prior to making his exit. In the top of the first inning, Sosa had tossed several balls aside — appearing to have an issue with gripping the baseball.

New York relief pitchers hit an additional five batters in the game.

Despite the loss, the Boulders did have their share of highlights. Giovanni Garbella recorded an outfield assist at home plate on a catch-and-throw double play from right field, and Matt McDermott made a sensational diving grab at shortstop.

The Boulders will be back in action Tuesday night at 7 p.m., when they open a three-game series against the Windy City Thunderbolts (9-12). To purchase tickets, value packs and more, head to the Boulders’ website at www.nyboulders.com.
