Malo, Les Capitales drive in eight runs to claim the series over the Boulders

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC-- The Rockland Boulders’ bats were silenced for the second consecutive game north of the border on Saturday night, as Les Capitales second baseman Jonathan Malo drove in a season-high four RBI in Quebec’s 8-2 victory at Stade Municipal.

Malo, who was one of five Capitales to drive in a run, finished 3-5 from the plate with a home run and two singles, improving Quebec’s (7-2) winning streak to four games.

Despite an offensive outburst by Les Capitales, it was the Boulders (5-4) who drew first blood in the top half of the third, as Junior Arrojo’s RBI single off of Quebec starter Steven Inch scored Luis Parache, making the score 1-0. But Quebec would match in the bottom half of the fourth, as shortstop Yurisbel Gracial drove in his third RBI of the series, a single that knotted the game a 1-1.

In the top of the sixth, Mike Schwartz led off the inning with a double to right-center field, but Schwartz would be stranded at third base, as Inch retired three consecutive hitters, putting an end to the Boulders’ threat.

After Rockland’s missed opportunity, Malo initiated his offensive tear in the bottom half of the frame, crushing a solo-shot over the center-field wall, handing Quebec a 2-1 lead. The home run would force Boulders’ starter Richard Salazar out of the contest, pulled by manager Jamie Keefe with one out in the fifth after striking out seven and allowing only four hits and three walks.

Quebec would add insult to injury in the seventh and eighth, posting three runs apiece off of Rockland relievers Edgar Valle and Donnie Joseph. Boulders’ outfielder Riley Palmer also took a beating, colliding into the right-field wall on an RBI triple by Derrick Pyles. Palmer would stay in the game after being evaluated by trainers, and would add a two-out RBI single in the ninth that concluded the scoring.

Inch (1-0) would earn the victory, completing six innings of one-run ball with five hits allowed. The silver lining for the Boulders came from outfielder Jared McDonald, as his walk in the third inning extended his regular-season on-base streak to 72 games.

Facing a three-game sweep of Quebec, the Boulders will look to salvage the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm at Stade Municipal, before heading west to face the Ottawa Champions on Memorial Day.
