Boulders Sweep Miners in Seventh Straight Win at Home

Markus Solbach records five shutout innings in Boulders fourth straight win.

(POMONA, NY) – The Rockland Boulders (18-9) completed the sweep of the Sussex County Miners (12-15) in dominant fashion Thursday night, winning 10-4. Center fielder Jared McDonald and left fielder Mike Schwartz recorded three RBI’s each with McDonald recording two home runs on the night.

Boulders pitcher Markus Solbach started the game recording one strikeout in the first inning facing four batters. Shortstop Junior Arrojo continued his infield hits trend with a bunt that got him onto first base and then stole his fifteenth base of the season later in the inning. A wild pitch by Ray Hanson allowed the Boulders to advance on base while Schwartz’s groundout gave the Boulders an early lead. A sacrifice fly by first baseman Jared Schlehuber extended the Boulders’ lead to two.

Right Fielder Brenden Webb recorded his second home run as a Boulder in as many days in the bottom of the second, making the score 3-0 Boulders. A pitch hit Arrojo for the fourteenth time this season, then the Boulders recorded a double steal with Arrojo taking his 16th base of the season, McDonald his 6th. The Boulders extended the lead to 5 with Schwarz recording his third RBI of the game.

Solbach opened the third inning with his third strikeout of the game in what would become a 1-2-3 inning. Third baseman Mike Fransoso opened the third inning for the Boulders with his first home run with the team. McDonald continued the scoring with a two-run homerun that extended the Boulders’ lead to 8.

The Boulders’ defense continued to perform in the fourth inning, recording their fifth double play in two games. Pitcher Ray Hansen retired for Sussex after recording three walks and two strikeouts in three innings with Drew Cisco taking over at the mound.

Sussex County’s defense started to take shape in the bottom of the fifth inning, recording their first double play and Cisco his second 1-2-3 inning of the night. Dominique Taylor got the Miners on the board with a home run in the top of the sixth inning. Cisco’s night ended with one strikeout facing six batters. Stone Speer, who took over for the Miners, recorded one strikeout and one walk in his first inning on the mound.

Left Fielder Carl Thomore cut the lead down to six for the Miners in the top of the seventh inning. The Miners continued to chisel away at the lead with a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Sean Hurley, and a triple by catcher Nate Irving.

Kole saw another inning at the mound after Sussex county retired Speer. After being shut out for three innings the Boulders got back into the game in the bottom of the seventh with Fransoso stealing a base and second baseman Pat McKenna recorded his first RBI as a Boulder to extend the lead to five runs.

Solbach was retired for the night in the top of the eighth inning after facing 28 batters, allowing 8 hits, no walks and six strikeouts. Pat Butler took over at the mound and struck out his first batter faced.

McDonald extended the Boulder’s lead to six with his second home run of the night, his eighth of the season, in the bottom of the eighth. The revolving door of Miners pitchers continued with Josh Wood becoming the fifth to take the mound. Daniel Carela replaced Butler for the Boulders in the top of the ninth as well. Carela ended the game with two straight strikeouts.
