Rockland Drops Third in a Row

(Pomona, NY) – The Boulders lost to the Champions Friday night 10-4. Starting pitcher for Rockland, Richard Salazar, recorded the loss and moves to 5-4. Former Boulder, Jarret Martin, received a no decision and Luis Munoz picked up his first win.

Ed Charlton had some big shoes to fill. Jared McDonald, the center fielder and leadoff hitter for Rockland, was absent from the starting lineup. In the top of the first Charlton made an impressive sliding catch to end the inning, taking away a single from Derrick Pyles and preventing Sebastien Boucher from moving into scoring position.

A couple innings later and Ottawa put up six runs in the third. Pyles successfully pulled off his first hit of the night, an RBI single that brought in the catcher, Daniel Grauer. The Champions took a 1-0 lead.

Kenny Bryant would be next. He hit a single and advanced to first, while Pyles made his way to second. An error by the shortstop allowed Albert Cartwright and Matt Helms to come in and score, increasing Ottawa’s lead to 3-0. A bullet to right center off the bat of Alexander Malleta brought in three more, making it 6-0. The home run was Malleta’s fourth of the season.

The Boulders cut Ottawa’s lead down to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Martin gave up his first hit to the third baseman, Mike Fransoso. He came in to score on an error by Helms.

Martin went 4.0IP before being pulled from the game. He loaded up the bases and hit the batter, Fransoso, to bring in a run making it 6-2. Luis Munoz took the mound in the fifth. Pat McKenna scored on a sac fly from Nidiffer, chipping away at the lead 6-3.

The Champions came right back and tacked on a pair in the sixth. Malleta and the shortstop, Daniel Bick, came in to score on a 2-run RBI single from Cartwright. The insurance runs added to Ottawa’s lead, 8-3.

Daniel Carela relieved Salazar in the seventh. He went 6.0IP, giving up eight runs (all earned) on eight hits.

Jared Schlehuber had his first hit of the game in the bottom of the inning. He hit an RBI double to right field, driving in Fransoso. The Boulders still trailed 8-4.

Ottawa was not finished with Rockland yet. The Champions put up two more runs in the ninth, bringing them to a grand total of 10 on the night. With the bases loaded, Michael Mastroberti singled in Boucher. Malleta came in to score for the third time on a wild pitch.
