Return of the offense gives Richard Salazar his sixth win

(Pomona, NY) – Red and blue lightsabers lit up the sky over Palisades Credit Union Park on Star Wars Night. Although the Boulders lost Game 1 (14-6) in Friday’s double-header with the Capitales, all was right again in the galaxy after a 5-0 victory in Game 2.

Rockland took charge of the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, ahead 1-0. Junior Arrojo was the Boulders’ first base runner, donning a Hoth themed jersey and taking the bag after being hit by a pitch. He came in to score on a Marcus Nidiffer at-bat, who singled and then made his way to second base on an error by the center fielder, Roel Santos.

After a couple shutout innings of play, the Boulders tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Montville scored on an RBI triple from Elvin Soto, the first of his career. Rockland led it 2-0.

Devin Harris blasted a double far, far away to left field in the fifth. Leandro Castro, who has been aboard in each of his three games thus far with the team, scored on the play. The Boulders added to their lead, 3-0.

Starting pitcher for Quebec, Mark Smyth (1-1), was done after 4.2IP. He faced 23 batters, giving up three runs on six hits. He also struck out six and walked two. The righty, Shaun Ellis, came in for relief.

The Boulders put up two more in the sixth to make it 5-0, the final. Mike Fransoso singled in Aaron Wilson, who ran for Montville at second base. Up next was Arrojo, who hit a single of his own into left field that brought in Pat McKenna.

Salazar (6-6) pitched a complete shutout in seven innings of work to bring a long day of baseball to a close. He allowed just three hits and struck out 10, a new season-best.

The Boulders (40-36) and the Capitales (44-32) will play again tomorrow night at 6:30pm. Tickets are available by visiting the box office, www.RocklandBoulders.com, or by calling (845) 364-0009.
