Rockland Dominates Opener before Falling in Nightcap

(TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec) – With three home runs in the first game of a twin bill, the Rockland Boulders earned a doubleheader split at Trois-Rivieres, making up a rainout from last week in Pomona. The Boulders (42-38) dominated the opener, 11-0, before dropping an 11-0 contest in the second game on Monday night.

Rockland’s offense picked up right where it left off on Sunday at home, scoring 12 runs against Quebec, and belted out 10 hits against Les Aigles (28-52) in Game One. The scoring began when Junior Arrojo doubled in the first, stole third, and scored on Marcus Nidiffer’s RBI groundout. Nidiffer followed with a two-run homer in the third, making it a 3-0 lead, before Pat McKenna’s two-run blast in the fourth blew the game open. The Boulders added another run that inning on a wild pitch and tacked on one more thanks to Devin Harris’ RBI single, making it 7-0 after four innings.

They would add four more runs in the sixth inning, including a three-run bomb from Jared Schlehuber. Meanwhile, starting pitcher David Fischer was having a stellar performance of his own. Fischer (6-3) tossed seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out four, to pick up the win for Rockland. Guillame Blanchette (1-4) pitched into the fourth inning, but could not get an out that frame, allowing five runs on six hits to take the loss.

Unfortunately, Rockland could not keep the momentum going in Game Two, mustering only two hits and committing two errors en route to the loss. Les Aigles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, scoring on a Kyle Lafrenz single and an error by Harris in left field. The advantage more than doubled in the third as Trois-Rivieres plated three more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Connor Crane.

Trailing 5-0 in the fifth, the Boulders bullpen and defense failed to quiet the Trois-Rivieres bats. Relief pitcher Daniel Carela allowed the first three batters to reach before walking in a run. Two batters later, an error from first baseman Elvin Soto allowed two more runs to score, making it an 8-0 game. Les Aigles was not done scoring three more times, including a two-run double by Steve Brown, to take an 11-0 lead.

Making his first start since July 6th, Bo Budkevics (4-4) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in two and one-third innings. The win went to Edilson Alvarez (4-3) who pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight.

Both teams continue their series on Tuesday night with a 7:00pm first pitch at Stade Stereo+. The Boulders will return home this Friday, August 19th, for a three-game set with New Jersey at Palisades Credit Union Park.
