Stephen Harrold was one of the best starting pitchers in the history of the Rockland Boulders, especially his record setting 2014 season when he dominated Can-Am competition.
However, Harrold only pitched from 2014-2015 with the Boulders. Afterwards, he retired from professional baseball to pursue a career in coaching. Immediately after the 2015 playoffs ended, Harrold went back to North Carolina and continued his job as a coach and instructor at the Factory Baseball Institute in Wake Forest. He actually began working with the organization following the 2012 season when he was still in the San Francisco Giants organization. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that he began working there full time. Harrold specifically works with children ages 5-18, hoping to advance their understanding and skills in the sport while sharing his experience after being a professional for six seasons.
Harrold began his professional career when he was drafted by the Giants in the 12th round in the 2010 MLB draft, out of UNC Wilmington. He was born in Florida, but moved to North Carolina before high school, and lives there now. He would work solely as a reliever during his time in affiliated ball, working his way up to High-A San Jose by 2013. Harrold put up solid numbers in his four years with the Giants, posting a 3.87 ERA, with a 15-12 record, earning 29 saves, as well as averaging 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings. Despite those good marks, Harrold was released after the 2013 season, where he was then promptly picked up the Rockland Boulders.
Harrold started his Boulder career in the bullpen, but manager Jamie Keefe saw the promise he had in the rotation. That caused a move to the rotation, and he simply took off from there. His first season in Pomona saw him post the second best ERA ever by a Boulders starter, with a 2.86 mark. His seven wins were also the fifth most ever in a single Boulder season. His start in game three of the 2014 Can-Am league championship series helped turn the tides for Rockland against New Jersey, starting in the first game that Rockland won in their comeback attempt, en route to winning the Can-Am crown a few games later.
Harrold would also pitch in the record setting 2015 season for the Boulders, where he cemented his status as one of the greatest pitchers to play for the team. As of now, Harrold has the fourth most complete games (3), third most wins (15) and third best career ERA (3.43). He also accomplished all of this while not even being in the top five in innings pitched, or starts.
