Ryan Scoma put together one of the best single seasons in Boulders history in 2012, posting some of the best marks in home runs and batting average ever posted in Rockland.
But 2012 was the slugging first baseman’s only season in Rockland, so what has he been doing since putting up such big numbers? In 2013, Scoma moved over to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the American Association for his age 25 season. There he continued to hit very well, hitting .341, with four home runs and 46 RBI in only 81 games. However, 2013 would be Scoma’s last season as a professional baseball player, as he would retire after the American Association year was over. He was supported briefly by his own business, where he personally coached and trained baseball players during the offseasons.
After that, Scoma was able to find a job with CareFusion as a sales consultant, which fit with his major from UC Davis in economics. CareFusion is part of the Becton Dickinson company, and Scoma works near his home in California despite BD being headquartered in New Jersey. He has lived in California all his live, being born in Redwood City. He is a representative of the company and goes around to hospitals selling medical equipment to them, specializing in surgical instruments.
Scoma was drafted in the 36th round in the 2009 MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants out of UC Davis. He put up decent numbers during his three years in the Giants organization, working his way up to Single-A Augusta. However, despite providing solid play, Scoma was released following the 2011 season. During his three years in affiliated ball, he hit .274, with nine home runs and 107 RBI, while also scoring 88 runs.
The Boulders realized Scoma’s talent and picked him up for the 2013 season, where he put up great numbers. He hit a .310/.364/.486 tripe slash line, as well as mashing 13 home runs while playing all 99 games that year. Those home runs are good for fifth most in a single season in Boulders franchise history. Scoma also proved to be a fantastic run producer, scoring 61 runs, while also driving in 59. His .310 batting average is the second best career mark in a Boulders uniform, with his on-base percentage being the fourth best in franchise history.
