Qualon Millender was one of the fastest players to ever wear a Rockland Boulders jersey, when he played for the team in their second season in 2012, highlighted by his four triples recorded, as well as his 15 stolen bases.
Millender’s 2012 season with the Boulders would be his final one as a professional baseball player. After that, he retired, and went back to college to get another degree. He actually returned to the University of North Alabama, the same school that he had graduated from in 2009 with a degree in accounting, in order to complete a bachelor’s in computer information systems.
After graduating in 2014 with his new degree in hand, Millender began a career as a software engineer at Higginbotham Software and Consulting, located in Florence, Alabama, near his hometown of Talladega, Alabama. The company specializes in custom software design, database design, and database maintenance. Millender is a big part of that now, becoming fluent in C++, and java, two of the primary programming languages used in today’s computers. In the future, he is hoping to continue working in the fields of IT consultation, software development, and cyber security.
The Boulders weren’t the only stop for Millender during his baseball career. Out of college, Millender was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago White Sox. He played in that organization for two years, from 2010-2011, reaching rookie level Great Falls in the Pioneer League. During his 2011 season, Millender hit .270, while stealing 28 bases, and recording five triples, both career highs. However, despite his solid performance, Millender was released following that season, which would be his last year in affiliated ball.
Upon being released, the Rockland Boulders picked him up in advance for 2012, and quickly installed him in their outfield. He would go on to play 91 games in a Boulders uniform, hitting a career best .302 with the team. He also hit his first, and only two career homer runs while playing with Rockland. His four triples that year are the fourth most hit in a single season in Boulders franchise history. His 48 walks are also good for the sixth best single season mark. He also holds a share of the single game record with four walks in a match against Fargo-Moorhead in 2012. The Boulders finished third in the Can-Am that year, with a record of 48-52.
