He was the first pitcher to ever throw a pitch in a Boulders uniform, as well as the man to have thrown more innings in it than anybody else on earth. Bobby Blevins was a Boulder for three years, from the franchise’s inception in 2011, to 2013.
However, Boulders fans haven’t seen Blevins since he left the Can-Am league after his last start with Rockland in 2013. Blevins actually still finds himself in professional baseball, pitching with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, at age 31. He actually played with the Ducks intermittently since 2012, after the Boulders season had finished each year, as the Atlantic season runs a bit longer.
Blevins is still trying to chase his major league dream, after coming close in 2010. Blevins was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007 out of LeMoyne College which in his hometown of Syracuse, the same school as former Boulder teammate Matt Nandin. After working steadily up to single-A in 2009, 2010 was a year of volatility for the young starter. It saw him play from single-A, all the way up to AAA, just a lick away from the major leagues. However, at the end of that season, Blevins was released from the organization. The year after, Blevins was signed by the Boulders, beginning what would be a historic tenure.
In 2016, his current season with the Ducks, Blevins has pitched in seventeen games, posting a 5.62 ERA, with a 1-7 record. The Ducks, as of 8/12/16, are in first place in the Liberty Division in the Atlantic League. During the winter seasons, Blevins continues to hone his trade in the Venezuelan Winter League, with the Navegantes del Magallanes, who he has pitched with during the past two winters.
Blevins has the most starts (59), innings pitched (411), and complete games (15) in Boulders franchise history. Going into the 2016 season, he also held franchise records in wins and strikeouts, but current Boulder Richard Salazar passed him up in each of those categories. On May 26, 2011, Bobby Blevins took the mound in Riverfront Stadium in Newark, New Jersey, and threw the first pitch in Boulders franchise history against the Newark Bears. He started the next two Opening Day starts in 2012 and 2013, giving him the most in franchise history.
