Productive fifth inning seals win

(POMONA NY) – A slow start led to the Rockland Boulders season-high seventh straight win against the Ottawa Champions Wednesday night. Mike Montville recorded the two RBI’s in the Boulders 2-1 win.

Neither team was able to make anything happen through the first two innings, with the Boulders (54-39) going 1-2-3 for both of their appearances.

Dual singles had Ottawa (50-44) threatening with runners at the corners in the top of the third however a popout followed a ground ball thrown to first left them stranded. Rockland ended the inning still looking for it’s first baserunner.

The Boulders went 1-2-3 for the fourth time in the fourth inning while Ottawa failed to capitalize on a runner at second.

The bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Boulders after Ottawa’s perfect pitching came to an end with a Devin Harris walk. A double by Leandro Castro and a Mike Montville 2 RBI single ended the shutout.

Ottawa began chiseling at the Boulders lead in the top of the sixth inning with Alexander Malleta scoring off of a wild pitch. Daniel Carela came in to replace Brett Palanski in the top of the inning as well. Palanski ended the night with 7 hits, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts facing 25 batters. Carela faced three pitchers before being replaced by Pat Butler who ended the inning with a strikeout.

Junior Arrojo recorded his 114th hit of the season in the top of the sixth inning to get the Boulder threatening. Marcus Nidiffer’s first hit of the night put runners at the corners however the inning ended with the Boulders still up just 1 run.

The top of the seventh inning opened with back-to-back strikeouts for Butler. A flyout to left field brought us to the seventh inning stretch.

The Boulders made their third pitching substitution of the night in the top of the eighth inning with Tony Amezcua making his Boulders debut. The Champions made a pitching substitution of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning with Randy Hamrick taking over for Laetten Galbraith.

Ottawa had last licks in the top of the ninth and was threatening with Adron Chambers recording a double with one out. Hector Nelo, who took over for Amezcua, caught Albert Cartwright swinging to get the second out however he walked Sebastian Boucher to put runners at first and second. Nelo struck out Kenny Bryant to seal the Boulders win.
