Salazar, McKenna star en route to 10th straight win

POMONA, NY- In the second game of a double-header, the Boulders didn’t skip a beat, winning their tenth game in a row, 5-4, over the New Jersey Jackals at Palisades Credit Union Park while Richard Salazar earned his 100th career win.
For Rockland (58-39), the success started on the mound behind Richard Salazar (10-6). Salazar entered the game with a Can-Am league record 27.1 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, and was able to extend that streak to 29.2 before allowing a run in the third inning on an RBI double by Rylan Sandoval.
If Salazar was upset about losing the streak, he didn’t show it through the rest of the game, shutting down New Jersey’s lineup the rest of the way, save a run allowed in the sixth. In the end, he allowed just two earned runs, only four hits, while punching out eight batters compared to only one walk.
Tony Amezcua came in for the seventh inning, and made the game interesting after allowing a two-run homerun to Taylor Brennan before getting to two outs. Hector Nelo was then called in to close out the game, and struck out Art Charles looking to shut the door, and earn his 17th save of the year.
On the offensive side, the Boulders struck first against New Jersey (59-47) and their starter James Stokes (2-3). It started in the second, where the Boulders scored a run on an error, as well as on a wild pitch to make a lead that they would never relinquish.
That lead was padded in the third by a Mike Montville and Pat McKenna, who each had RBI singles. McKenna paced the offense for the game, going 2-3 on the day, driving in two runs. August Player of the Month Jared Schlehuber stayed hot as well, finishing 2-3, as well as scoring a run.
The eight strikeouts gave Salazar 104 on the year, making him the first pitcher in franchise history to post back-to-back 100 strikeout seasons. He took the Boulders career strikeout record earlier this season. The win also marked the 100th of his career, a career that began in 2001 in the Baltimore Orioles system, and has led him to Pomona.
The win pulled Rockland within one game of New Jersey for the lead in the Can-Am league. Their last three games will be against each other, so the pennant will come down to the wire. The first pitch for Saturday’s game, Italian Heritage Night, is scheduled for 6:30 P.M.
