(OTTAWA, Ontario) – Mike Montville’s sacrifice fly and outfield assist in the 10th inning gave the Rockland Boulders a 5-4 win over Ottawa in Game Two of the Can-Am League Championship Series at RCGT Park on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Boulders hold a 2-0 lead in this best-of-five series and are one win away from their second league title in three years.

For the second straight night, the Boulders grabbed an early lead as Devin Harris’ single drove in Junior Arrojo for the 1-0 advantage. Ottawa would tie it up quickly though on an RBI double from Matt Helms in the bottom of the second inning. Helms then gave the Champions the lead in the fourth with an RBI single before a throwing error from Albert Cartwright helped Rockland knot things up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth.

The scoring would cease until the top of the ninth when the Boulders rallied against Laetten Galbraith. With two outs and nobody on, Quinnton Mack reached on an error by third baseman Donal Duarte. Pat McKenna would follow with a walk before Elvin Soto pinch hit for Aaron Wilson. The reserve catcher laced a line drive to left that scored Mack while Helms bobbled the ball, allowing McKenna to score and give Rockland the 4-2 lead.

Ottawa would not go quietly though as they had a rally of their own in store against Boulders closer Hector Nelo. After getting the first batter of the inning to strikeout, Nelo walked the next two batters before a wild pitch put the tying runs in scoring position. Duarte then made up for his error by roping a single to right field that tied the game. He was tagged out trying to advance to second and Alexander Malleta flew out, sending the contest to extra innings.

In the top of the 10th Rockland would load the bases with one out when Montville’s sacrifice fly to right brought in Arrojo, giving the road team a 5-4 lead. Ottawa again attempted a rally, putting the tying run on base with two outs as Danial Bick walked. As Adron Chambers doubled to right, Montville’s throw to McKenna, and the ensuing relay home, caught Bick at home for the final out.

The loss was charged to Galbraith (0-1) after being charged with three runs, one earned, in his two innings of relief while Nelo (1-0) got the win despite giving up two runs in his lone inning of work. Because of Montville’s heroics in the field, Matt Kostalos picked up the save for Rockland.

Both starting pitchers were valiant in their efforts, despite not factoring into the decision. Richard Salazar went seven innings for the Boulders allowing two runs on 10 hits and striking out seven. Meanwhile, Ottawa’s Daniel Cordero also tossed seven strong frames, giving up two runs, one earned, and struck out eight.

The series now shifts to Pomona as Rockland will host a potential championship-clinching Game 3 at 7:00pm at Palisades Credit Union Park.
