Regis Wins Back to Back Player of the Week; Topa named Pitcher of the Week

The Rockland Boulders and the official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Rockland Boulders INF Cody Regis and P Justin Topa has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week respectively for the week ending June 4.

This marks the second consecutive Pointstreak Player of the Week award for Regis, who also took home the honors last week. The Los Angeles native picked up right where he left off this week, hitting .440 (11-for-25) over the course of the week, collecting two doubles, three home runs, and eight RBI.

Just hours after being named last week’s winner, Regis began his week on Monday in a home doubleheader against the Ottawa Champions on Memorial Day. In game one, Regis fell just a triple shy of the cycle, as he went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI as the Boulders rolled 10-0. Regis collected a 1-for-3 line in game two of the doubleheader, as Ottawa took their lone win of the four-game series. After an off day Tuesday, Regis and the Boulders faced Ottawa again on Wednesday and Thursday. In a 6-5 Rockland win on Wednesday, Regis put together a 3-for-4 line with a double, home run and two RBI. The Boulders earned the series win on Thursday with a 7-6 triumph, as Regis was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Regis is now hitting .412 (28-for-68) on the season with five doubles, six home runs and 16 RBI.

Regis is in his first season with Rockland after two years in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He hit .290 with 25 doubles, three triples, a home run and 58 RBI in 2015 with the Class A Kane County (Ill.) Cougars of the Midwest League, and followed that up with a 2016 season split between the Class A Advanced Visalia (Calif.) Rawhide of the California League and the Class AA Mobile (Ala.) BayBears of the Southern League. He hit a combined .256 in 2016, notching 16 doubles, five triples, a home run and 36 RBI.

Topa made two starts this week, and earned a pair of victories.  His first start came Monday against the Ottawa Champions in game one of Rockland’s Memorial Day doubleheader.  Over five innings, Topa did not allow a run, gave up just two hits and did not walk a batter.  He struck out four hitters as Rockland rolled 10-0. The Binghamton, N.Y. native returned to the mound on Sunday to face the Quebec Capitales on the road.  Working six innings, Topa struck out three and did not walk a batter.  He surrendered four runs on five hits, but was buoyed by his offense in a 6-4 Rockland win.

Topa is now 3-0 with a 2.90 ERA over his four appearances (all starts) in 2017. He has struck out 16 and walked just three over 21.2 innings of work.

The fourth-year professional is in his first season in Independent Baseball following a three-year stint in the Pittsburgh Pirates system.  After being picked in 17th round in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft out of Long Island University-Brooklyn, Topa was sent to the Short Season Class A Jamestown (N.Y.) Jammers of the New York-Penn League.  Over 19 relief appearances, he worked 37 innings, striking out 33. He compiled a 5-2 record and 2.19 ERA. That performance was good enough to merit a promotion to the Class A West Virginia Power of the South Atlantic League in 2014, where Topa went 4-8 with a 6.11 ERA. After sitting out 2015, Topa returned in 2016, pitching 10 combined games with the Gulf Coast League Pirates and the Class A Advanced Bradenton (Fla.) Marauders of the Florida State League. Topa went 2-0 with a 2.13 ERA in his limited season.

Regis, Tice, and the rest of the Boulders continue their road trip and start a three game series tonight at 7:05pm in Ottawa, before returning home Thursday to begin a "home and home" series with their rival, the New Jersey Jackals.  Great seats are available by calling our box office at (845) 364-0009 or by sliding over to Rocklandboulders.com.
