Rockland entered Wednesday’s outing vs. New Jersey tied with Quebec atop the Can-Am League looking to get back in the win column. They instead would lose their second-straight contest, this one in 8-3 fashion.

The Boulders got off on the right foot in the first. Ace Justin Topa produced a scoreless top and in the bottom half, Mike Montville ripped a two-RBI double. The second and third would go quietly thanks to solid work from Topa and David Richardson.

New Jersey’s bats then woke up in the fourth. Brian Joynt singled before Adam Martin and Ryan Retz went back-to-back to put the Jackals up 3-2. New Jersey added another in the fifth on a Joe Dunigan sacrifice fly to score Rylan Sandoval.

That would end Topa’s night as he concluded with five innings, eight hits, four earned runs, four strikeouts and two walks.

The Boulders got that run back in the sixth on a Jared McDonald solo shot into the ‘Short Porch.’ Richardson went one more for the Jackals and finished with six hits, three runs (two earned), four strikeouts and three walks.

After two successful innings of relief from C.J. Riefenhauser, Tommy Lawrence took the hill in the eighth. He allowed one on a wild pitch and three more in the ninth.

Dunigan drove in Sandoval on a single and Joynt cleared the bases with a triple. Evan DeLuca kept the Boulders’ bats silenced in the eighth and ninth.

Rockland will resume action tomorrow at Yogi Berra Stadium in New Jersey. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
