Jared Mederos and Martin Figueroa recorded three hits each in a 14-hit attack as the Sussex County Miners downed the Rockland Boulders in the 2018 Can Am League opener for both teams.

Sussex County posted solo runs in each of the first two innings, but JC Rodriguez cut the deficit in half in the home second with an RBI single, driving home Mike Montville to make the score 2-1.

Rockland starter Justin Topa settled in after a slow start, and the hosts rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when a throwing error by Miners first baseman Figueroa scored Aaron Wilson from second.

Topa was forced to leave the game due to an undisclosed injury in the sixth inning and the visitors took full advantage of the Rockland bullpen, taking the lead with an eight run outburst over the final three frames, more than overcoming Rodriguez' seventh inning solo homer.

David Rollins took the win for Sussex County with Nick Kennedy tagged with the relief loss for the Boulders. The series shifts to Sussex for a Friday night game before returning to Palisades Credit Union Park for a 6:30 pm double-header on Saturday.
