Last night I attended what initially I thought was “a really good baseball game” between the Boulders and the Cuban team. Unfortunately it ended as a “travesty and a black-eye to the game” which I love so much. The action taken by the umpires in the ninth inning was a complete charade and an indication of their incompetence and lack of knowledge for the rules of the game. Whether or not the play at second base was a good or bad call had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. Given the fact, that the play could not be reviewed, a call was made by the umpire and under no circumstance should it have been changed only after the Boulder’s coach came onto the field to protest it. Yes, I agree that the Cuban team was livid with the sudden and overturned decision, and possibly overreacted somewhat. However, to add further insult to injury, for the umpires to cancel the game which by the way, the Cubans had the momentum at that point with the possibility of tying the game…was simply ridiculous and incomprehensible. It was truly an exciting game up to that point and it should have been allowed to be completed. Once I saw the umpires running off the field as if they feared for their life…it immediately reminded me that this is yet another sign of the times. So now, the umpires are also going to follow suit with the latest statements of defense and justification recently taken by law enforcement…”my decision was made due to the fact that I feared for my life”. This was a simple great baseball game that was seriously tainted by a series of bad decisions and the audacity of your recap in the newsletter making it seem as if nothing ever happened, is even more inconceivable to me. Not a happy fan of Boulder baseball!
